Spring 2005 Construction Project

What is all the Excitement About?

This has been our biggest United Way Day of Caring project day ever! Xerox volunteers built a shed for Peddler, cleared brush, refinished furniture, sealed the barn roof, built a jump and mounting box and added skylights to the barn doors. Kodak volunteers completed a brand-new structure, an all-purpose utility building. Think of it as a giant garage. It has two oversized garage stalls for tractors, a workshop, and a tack storage room. There is also an extended roof at one end for protection of outdoor stuff. Take a look at our construction photo diary to see the utility building construction process and all the volunteers at work.

Thank You  --  Thank You!

We owe a huge debt of thanks to all the volunteers who donated their time and energy to construct the building: The crew from Kodak who helped us on the United Way Day of Caring, the Carpenter's Union and Apprentices, the DDSO CREW, FLACRA, the Wayne County Weekend Work Release program, DOT, Ron, Bill, Walt and Lee. Please take a look at their efforts in our construction photo diary.

Jim Kane of Simply Effective was kind enough to produce the Everybody Rides web site. The site provided a means for some of the volunteers for Day of Caring to follow the building as it progressed. Jim claimed he could not swing a hammer but we think he swings a "mighty clean web site". Phone (585) 442-7974 or e-mail Jim at jim@simply-effective.com

Our building plans were drawn by Hanlon Architects of Fairport NY. They also provided us with recommendations for material sources and construction advice. Phone (585) 223-6440 or on the web at www.hanlonarchitects.com.

The site excavating and grading was provided by Ed Gantz and his son Jason. They provide expert site work around the Lyons and Newark areas. Call Ed at (315) 946-4425.

Jim Cleason generously donated gravel and provided concrete for the footers and floor. You can reach the dispatcher at Abram Cleason Co. for info on their products at (315) 331-4729 or (800) 594-0186.

Kurt Allman of Double AA Driveways donated trucking for the stone fill from Cleasons. Call Kurt at (315) 589-5361 for your driveway needs.

Steel reinforcement for the foundation and floor was provided by Rochester Steel and Surplus. Call Bruce, Steve or Gary at (585) 458-8100, or go to www.rochestersteel.com.

All of the materials for the building structure were provided by Santelli Lumber. Gary Tyler, at the Lyons store, spent many hours on our materials list to provide the most economical selection of materials and with the least waste. All materials arrived on time, and Gary attended to every last detail. Call Santelli's Lyons branch at (315) 946-4867 or their Palmyra store at (315) 597-4884.

The Newark Wegmans store donated water and pop to quench the thirst of the United Way Day of Caring volunteers from Kodak and Xerox.

Montana Mills Bakery in Canandaigua donated bread for breakfast on the Day of Caring. Call (585) 396-2160.

The Newark McDonalds donated water coolers and cups for the United Way Day of Caring volunteers.
